Chapter Fourteen

Rob couldn’t move. He focused on what he took from the memory and how it filled his thoughts, but as he stared, he still didn’t know if there was anything he could fully process.

He looked at Serena, who was quiet. She avoided doing anything more with her essence, not wanting to sweep through Tessatha’s mind, but maybe she’d need to help Tessatha. Still, Tessatha didn’t seem to recognize what they were doing, or how the connection existed. It was like she didn’t recognize Arowend’s essence form.

And maybe she didn’t.

Given that Arowend could take different forms, and that he often fluctuated, taking on Rob’s form—his current form—maybe she didn’t recognize her husband.

But some part of her essence, some part of her mind, recognized him.

And that was… sweet.

Despite everything that happened, all the changes that existed between them, and despite everything the thorns had done, a part of her still held onto the memory of who and what she was and who and what she’d been.

“Rob?”

“I need to talk to him,” he said.

“Be careful,” she said, looking at Tessatha. “I… Well, I don’t know what to make of this, but I worry we risk her being overwhelmed by everything that’s happened here if we tell her too much. We need to give them time.”

“I understand,” Rob whispered. “And I’ve been trying to do that with Arowend, helping to fill in some gaps in his mind, but I’m wondering if he needs to fill those gaps as quickly as possible.”

“What if it’s not possible?”

“It has to be,” Rob said.

He started to Arowend when Serena’s connection called him back to her. Even if it was just a tentative reach out to him, it was enough to stop Rob in his tracks, so he looked back at her briefly.

“He’s the essence,” Serena said. “She’s not. I don’t know if we can do anything.”

“He’s more than just an essence memory. I felt it. You felt it.”

“I don’t know what I felt, but I… Well, I just don’t know.”

He sensed her mental struggle, and wondered about its cause, but didn’t push.

Maybe there was a way for Tessatha to help Arowend. At least, that was Rob’s hope. If they could learn to work together, to help free his memories, Rob thought he could learn more. More than that, he hoped they both could learn something more. Arowend may have lost some of his memories, but so had Tessatha, as it seemed like whatever was happening to her was difficult enough, so she didn’t have the recollection of everything she should. The thoughts were in her mind, though. And with time, and enough of an essence cleansing, it was possible she could have those thoughts freed to recall who and what she was.

He reached Arowend. “How are you?”

“There’s something about this woman,” Arowend said.

“Yes,” Rob said.

Arowend looked at him. “You recognize it, as well? She’s dangerous. I can feel it. A part of my essence is reacting to her.”

That was an interesting way to put it. Rob wondered if there was something they could do to help him, but he’d have to go about it delicately.
